What are Cicada Wasps and why are they digging holes in my lawn? We often get calls about a large bee or wasp that is making holes in the lawn. Most likely with a few observations it would be easy to determine if the lawn contains Cicada Wasps, Ground Digger Wasps or Cicada Killer Wasps.

Cicada Wasps are beneficial insects, however large wasps digging in my lawn and aggressively flying at me don’t seem to be very beneficial to me or my lawn and landscape! Cicada Wasps can be quite scary, and can multiple and ruin a lawn as they burrow and increase their populations every year. So the question is do you remove these insects and can you do so without pesticides? Well if you can’t tolerate theses flying and burrowing insects then yes, they can be removed without pesticides.

Whats the Best Way To Remove Cicada Wasps?

Trapping these wasps is an effective way to remove these cicada killers. By removing the female wasp, which digs in the lawn, the male wasp, (the one aggressively flying around), will have no reason to stay. The wasps that dig these burrows are preparing a chamber to lay eggs that she injects in a cicada. The male will attempt to mate with her and is very aggressive and territorial. Safely trapping the female, the male simply goes elsewhere. Killing the flying male will do nothing to fix the problem, more males will simply move into the area and aggressively staking their territory. Its important to remove the female, which is the only reason the male cicada is there to begin with.

Please don’t pour ammonia in the holes, it is extremely harmful to pets and the soil and often doesn’t work.
